I'd always wanted to read this, as I've seen the movie, but wasn't sure if I'd be able to make it through a 500 page book about golf. Fortunately, Mark Frost is such a good writer, you don't need to have more than a passing interest in golf to find it interesting. The story at the heart of the book is what really sucks you in, but I found even some of the old, old history of the game to be fascinating as well. And you need to know that history to fully appreciate the story of the 1913 U.S. Open.
