For a so-called horror story this one is rather gracious. And not even mildly scary. A very long whodunit, involving two generations of one unlucky family plus assorted other intellectuals known to them, and travels over much of Europe. This book must have needed a lot of research on the author's part, and the title tells you exactly what you get; a history. And I agree with other reviewers, *watch out, spoiler ahead* Dracula is a librarian? That's right up there with God being a woman who bakes ...more

Although this is perhaps one of the LONGEST books I have ever read, the story was extremely interesting. I'm simply amazed at all the research the author had to have done to pull off such a cohesive product. Basically the Historian is a story about a girl and her father (and mother to some extent). One day the girl begs the father to take her with him as he travels on business and he begins to tell her a story of his and her mother's search for Dracula (and a missing advisor/parent). I loved this book! I knew it was going to be about Dracula somehow, but an ancient book-collecting vampire, not at all what I expected. The triple narrative, the telling of the story from three different perspectives and time periods, was absolutely brilliant. The ending was rather anticlimactic and I was somewhat disappointed by it, until I read the epilogue, great book!

This book was amazing. It was a great story that mixed a hunt for Dracula in the 1950's with so much history about post-WWII Eastern Bloc, as well as the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century. The story was well written and besides the point that it was told by 3 different people you were never confused about whose story you were reading. I LOVED it! ...more

Put the book down and back away! Not worth reading. It was too long, TMI (too much information), and characters that didn't make it worth wading through it all. A total waste of time! ...more
