I wanted to love this book - the idea of a literary detective is so much fun. I enjoyed this book, but on the whole, it just seemed kind of flat. I feel like maybe I missed some hidden literary jokes. Perhaps my knowledge of history was at fault. I liked it well enough to read the next one when it comes my way, but I won't rush to the store for it.

This book is set in an alternative England - the Crimean War is still in progress and has done untold damage to the psyche of the average citizen. Do

Thursday Next lives in a world very different from the world you know. Time travel is possible, England has been at war with Russia for over 100 years, dodo birds are the "in" pet to have literature is a very very very serious thing. So serious that Thursday works for the SO-27 the literary agents. Her job to protect literature and to keep fakes off the market. One day she is approached by the head of SO-5 a secretive division that is hunting a man from Thursdays past. Eager to help Thursday agr ...more

This book is a strange combination of in-jokes, weird juxtapositions, strange names and science fiction. It was a quick read, but somehow it just missed the mark for me. Sure, there were many moments when I marvelled at Fford's creative genius, but at the end it didn't hang together enough.
Loved the Dodos (plock plock), the bookworms that eat prepositions (and fart out apostrophes and ampersands) and the random names, though kept wondering when he would give in to what must have been a strong c

This was pretty cool. Fforde is definitely clever and extrememly creative. The book is set in an alternate London around 1985 where people time travel and jump in and out of books. Jane Eyre gets kidnapped out of the original manuscript and all copies of the book are changed. The main character, Thursday Next, has to try and get Jane back and set things back to normal.

If you like books and if you like mysteries that are a little quircky, give Eyre Affair a try. I could even say if you like Jane Eyre or Science Fiction give Eyre Affair a try. Jasper Fforde takes a very unique concept and makes it work. He combines all these elements and more and puts them together to create a story that will blow your socks off.

A great idea w/ pretty poor execution. It starts well and deteriorates. Its also much too long, the story could have lost 100 pages comfortably. Also, it really bugged me that the first person narrator was somehow able to know what other people were doing when she wasnt there or know their thoughts.

Not bad but not as fun as I was expecting it to be. It was about three quarters into the book before there was really any plot surrounding Jane Eyre. Might read the next in the series but it can wait for a bit.
