What Members Thought

This book is set in the late 1700's/early 1800's Europe (mostly England). This world is just like ours, except that dragons exist and are used somewhat like fighter jets. This story focuses on Laurence (a British naval captain) and Temeraire (his loyal dragon). I suppose this is my fault for not researching this book more carefully before reading it, but I thought it was a straightforward fantasy novel instead of the alternate history novel that it turned out to be. Admittedly, I think this series was just tailor-made for me. I'm a fan of Jane Austen's novels, of CS Forester's Horatio Hornblower books and of Anne McCaffrey's Pern, and this book (and series) has elements of all those works plus the delightfully unique. These books feature an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars, with dragons forming an aerial corps.
