Wow! Okay, I can say that Davenport is not like anything other cop character I've ever read before. He's definitely an original, and I don't know how much I should say for fear of blowing it for those who haven't read it and wish to. The summary in the back of the book builds this as a kind of duel between cop and serial killer, and so whether you are held by this book depends upon your reaction to those two characters. In the introduction, Sandford himself says of his police detective protagonist that "cops don't act like Lucas Davenport--they'd be fired or even imprisoned if they did," and he calls the character a "cross between a cop and a movie star." A friend had recommended that I give Sandford's "Prey" series a try. Since the author is a former journalist who turned to fiction, my friend thought I might find his work interesting. Although I was told the first book is not the best in the series, I found it to be an enjoyable read. Like some similar writers; however, the author told a compelling story early on, but did seem to rush the ending and tie it all up a little too quickly and neatly.(John Grisham does come to mind in that arena!).
