The opening sucked me in--vivid, memorable, in a few paragraphs you get a sense of who Philip Marlowe, private dick, is in his own words, as well as something about who his client General Sternwood is--Marlowe is "calling on four million dollars," and when this was published in 1939, that was a hell of a lot of money.

Very driving plot and really does make you like Marlowe as a character. The style of writing is very good and extremely edgy, adding to the gripping sense of the action. Marlowe's interactions with the different character are always entertaining because he is the consummate antihero, a guy who thinks the worst of everyone and everything around him.
