This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. I have had WWI on the brain from assignments at work. WWI doesn’t get the kind of coverage and romanticism that WWII gets—it tends to be a bit overlooked.

Great first book of a series that I will definitely follow. A young woman, making her way in the world, having been mentored and rescued from a poverty stricken life due to her intelligence. She finds opportunity, and spiritual growth while leading a very interesting life in the 1910 to 1920's. A really fun and better than your average mystery. Especially for those of us who want to read about female heroes and movers and shakers. Great book. Can't wait to start the next one in the series. ...more

Maisie Dobbs is everything I like in a mystery: history, a down-to-earth strong woman, a multi-layered story with intriguing characters, no grisly gore. Some of Maisie's story is a rags to almost riches tale, but her character unfolds as the mystery does, in surprising ways. The consensus of Novel Women book group was overwhelmingly positive.
