The television series Bones is loosely based on the Temperance Brennan novels--it's not a show I've ever followed, so I went in with no expectations. Like her narrator and heroine, Tempe Brennan, Reichs is herself a forensic anthropologist and has worked as one for law enforcement in Montreal. There's no question there's an authenticity in how she writes of Tempe's investigations, and that's a great deal of the fascination of the story, as is the setting of Quebec, which is well rendered.

Although I've never been able to get into the Bones TV show, I had been wanting to try the books. I picked this one up at a library sale, with no idea which number in the series it was (BTW, I really wish publishers would put this information somewhere on the book itself- I hate trying to guess or not even knowing it's part of a series). A great start, although having come off of the TV show into the novels, I find the dynamics on the show much more intruiging than that of the novels. It's also a bit hard to relate to the novel version of Temperance. It's still a good start, and a really interesting novel, so I'll definitely pick up the others.
