Brother Cadfael, the sleuth in this book and series, is a monk in the Benedictine Order in the 12th Century during the struggle for the throne between King Stephen and Empress Maud and the history of the time is skillfully woven into the narrative.

3.5 stars. Fun. It is a mystery - but not a "thriller." Despite its provocative title, author Ellis Peters ambles along, like the monks on their journey. What I enjoyed most was Brother Cadfael's gentle cleverness. Though he is a monk, he does relate well to the strong women characters. I will definitely try another in the series.
