It's a brilliant read. You get quite caught up in the lives of these women, their culture, dress, relationships with each other, and the fine line they have to walk between art and entertainment and sexuality. Memoirs of a Geisha is an introduction to the private world of the Geisha's in pre-war Japan. This book made me aware of the Geisha sub-culture and curious to learn more.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way it was written, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and I was interested in the characters. All around, it was a wonderful read... then I read the ending and all that changed for me. I don't want to give it away, but the ending was a big letdown for me. I'm sorry, but I couldn't even finish this one. The story is interesting, but the inordinate time spent on describing the kimono's and hairstyles and ornaments just about drove me crazy. What a great book!!!! It a wonderful story about the life of a Japanese woman who is sold as a girl and trained to be a Geisha. The story also covers the history, and war that affected Japan. Before, during, and after World War 1 & 2 through her eyes. It was hard for me to believe this was written by a man.
This is one of my all time favorite books!
