Although not the laugh-out-loud humor that I expected, David Sedaris's collection of essays both captured my imagination and conjured up memories of my own childhood that I hadn't even realized I had forgotten.
There is no set story-line, only a loose sense Sedaris aging as the book progresses. The essays span his entire life, beginning (loosely) in his childhood and ending (loosely) in his current adult life. Each essay is a little vignette on the family he grew up with, the lovers he's had, an ...more

I think many of Sedaris' personal vignettes in this book were both poignant and laugh-out-loud hilarious. Yet, other times, they were disjointed, a little confusing and rambling for my taste. This book was a waste of time. It drags you though an un-captivating series of embellished short stories capturing fragments of the authors past... How could one go wrong? For starters, the stories seem completely fictional. Secondly, David, placing himself in many funny and awkward situations, doesn't turn the setup into anything amusing. I finished most stories wondering 'why did he write that?'.
