We listened to this book read by the author--which was a real bonus since the very first story is about his speech impediment. And the whole thing was totally worth listening to simply for the following item: the author (this is a memoir) dreamed of having an act where he would sing the jingles of advertisers as Billie Holliday. And since the author is the reader, he gives you a sample. And his Billie Holliday impersonation is top notch. Seriously delighted me.

1. Nearly half way and already Mr Sedaris and I aren't getting on. I bought this because he was supposed to be hilarious; people bursting into fits of laughter on the subway while reading this???? What were they on?
2. I have to admit to a completely unreasonable dislike of short stories. There you are investing your time reading away and paf it's all over. Why bother? (Still not funny though).

There are elements of the book that I enjoyed very much, particularly the author's account of his childhood in North Carolina. Sedaris has a great and very humorous narrative style. I did have some difficulty with the way the book jumps around chronologically from chapter to chapter, but that is a minor issue. This is not truly a bio but instead a collection of life stories. Some aspects of Sedaris' character are a bit annoying -- he's lazy, judgmental and seems to feel superior while, at the sa

Well, after reading most of the essays in this book I've learned something. This is not a genre I enjoy reading. Memoir essays.
