There are elements of the book that I enjoyed very much, particularly the author's account of his childhood in North Carolina. Sedaris has a great and very humorous narrative style. I did have some difficulty with the way the book jumps around chronologically from chapter to chapter, but that is a minor issue. This is not truly a bio but instead a collection of life stories. Loved it! Laughed out loud til tears came! (2003)

Just reread it for book group - and I seldom read books twice. Enjoyed some of it just as much.

My favorite chapters are about Sedaris' guitar lessons with the "small person" and Jesus Shaves - how foreign students describe Easter with very limited vocabularies. Hilarious. Skip the chapter about his brother Rooster, if you don't like "fowl" language.

This collection of essays by David Sedaris is really clever and really funny. He manages to make a subject like trying to learn to speak French seem really interesting. It's not easy to take the ordinary events of your life and turn them into something that so many people find hilarious but Sedaris manages to make it happen. ...more

Well, after reading most of the essays in this book I've learned something. This is not a genre I enjoy reading. Memoir essays.

Not nearly as funny as I expected it to be. Yes, humorous, but not laugh out loud funny. Fast read, but not worth the hype I was given. And, it's just not for me.
