I loved this against expectations. The blurbs spurt encomiums such as "best science fiction novel ever." One by Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Diaz calls it "Perhaps the most important war novel written since Vietnam." Such praise made me start the novel in a rather cynical "show me" mood. Given it's reputation as an "anti-war" novel I also feared it might be bitter, angry polemic or depressing.

What the hell was I thinking letting this book sit in my to be read pile for 4 years!! This excellent novel by Haldeman needs to be read. Originally released in the 1970's this is the author's preferred version with material that had been edited out reincluded back in. Haldeman's incisive look at the machinery of war and political manuverings to make an industry are eerily prescient of the situation the world is in now.
