What happens after the nuclear war that almost wipes out the planet? This is Miller's answer, a book in three parts. By following a monastery and its monks through the centuries, and bringing in quite a lot of Latin and Catholic themes, he asks whether we can stop repeating our mistakes. He writes with dry humour that at times verges on farce, and at times disappears into ambiguity; well I couldn't figure it all out, and I suspect we are not meant to.
