While there were moments that I really appreciated the writing of St. Augustine, I found this book so very tedious to finish! His conversion story was fascinating, but I struggled with his rhetoric and long philosophical lectures. I was hoping for some enlightenment, but in the end felt that he really gave me no reason to feel that the conclusions he had reached concerning God and religion were good and based on anything but his own interpretation of scripture. In a completely unrelated rant, I blame Diana Gabaldon completely for destroying my ability to keep up with my booklist this year. First I had to re-read the entire Outlander Series to prep for Echo in the Bone in September, and there were all of those Lord John books to get through. Ugh. (I loved every minute of my re-reads, but still, the booklist is definitely shot.)

I read Sarah Ruden’s 2017 translation and it was a joy. You might think this book is only for serious Christians but it’s a lovely book for those interested in early philosophy and for anyone who struggles with her darker angels. I am not a Christian although raised as a Protestant. I found Augustine’s voice to be alternately sweet, agonized, joyous, humble, a few times a little full of himself and utterly human.
