Mayes is obviously a gifted writer, but she chose some of the most dry material to write about. I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the book, but my enjoyment quickly turned to boredom when I realized that Mayes was just going to... repeat the same experiences with slightly different details (a different Etruscan painting, a different recipe, a different difficulty with the house).
