I love Herriot's warmth and humor as he writes about his first years as a country vet in 1930s Yorkshire. He's not above laughing at himself when he finds himself in a ridiculous situation as well. There's a lot of birthing of large animals and drinking and trying to get country farmers to give up cherished folklore and an erratic boss. Loved this. ...more
