I love Herriot's warmth and humor as he writes about his first years as a country vet in 1930s Yorkshire. He's not above laughing at himself when he finds himself in a ridiculous situation as well. There's a lot of birthing of large animals and drinking and trying to get country farmers to give up cherished folklore and an erratic boss. Loved this.

When I was younger, my mother kept a shelf of old tattered copies of her own books in our old study. one day, lacking reading matieral (I was about 7 or 8, I think,) I found a bedraggled book with a pretty cover that had animals on it. It was an original copy of All Creatures Great and Small, selling for about 50 cents back when my mother got it.
