I love Herriot's warmth and humor as he writes about his first years as a country vet in 1930s Yorkshire. He's not above laughing at himself when he finds himself in a ridiculous situation as well. There's a lot of birthing of large animals and drinking and trying to get country farmers to give up cherished folklore and an erratic boss. Loved this.

When I was younger, my mother kept a shelf of old tattered copies of her own books in our old study. one day, lacking reading matieral (I was about 7 or 8, I think,) I found a bedraggled book with a pretty cover that had animals on it. It was an original copy of All Creatures Great and Small, selling for about 50 cents back when my mother got it. James Herriot is a master story teller! Years ago as a teenager I read this book and enjoyed it. Now, after having lived in Yorkshire, this book is even better. Herriot pulls the reader into the story with his well drawn characters and hilarious tales of being a vet in rural Yorkshire.
Read these all in High School in the early 70s. Entertaining stories. Humorous.
