We read this for book club a few years back and I liked it but I didn't love it. I have to admit I was much more interested in the hermaphrodite part of the story and grew weary of all of the family history although I can appreciate that it was well written. I think I've rotted my brain reading too many fluff books and now I'm impatient with books that require more attention-it's terrible!

I was a little skeptical at first when the author went all the way back to the early 1900's to start the story. But I loved how everything came full circle. Once I started to understand all the connections between Desdemona, Lefty, Cal, etc. I was really hooked. Some good twists and turns, not to mention I learned a whole lot about intersex issues!

Very compelling, great character development. I love when an author explores generations and the story just moves. It's definitely not like any other book I've read. I really enjoyed it.

A great book read at night after a full day of seeing Portugal. A story full of the history of a city, family and culture. The societal descriptions were perfect. I can't wait to read it again!
