What Members Thought

This reminded me strongly of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. That story about a mentally retarded man is a first-person narrative that puts you into an utterly alien mindscape. In this novel it's an autistic English teen: My name is Christopher John Francis Boone. I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057.

This book does a good job of getting into the mind of someone with Asperger's. The book frequently made me mad because the author offered no explanation other than the publisher's inside flap blurb about the medical conditions of the child-narrator. The blurb said the boy had autism, probably wrong, it's probably Asperger's. Second, it sets a high bar for what you can expect an Asperger's child to accomplish as what the author does not clarify is that most likely the child is an autistic savant.
