So this book utterly swept me away in its gorgeous prose. This was my first Ian McEwan novel but most certainly will not be my last. His rich portraits of Cecelia, Robbie, and Briony and the world they inhabit absolutely carry you away which is why he makes you feel so passionately what happens to all of these characters even Briony in her flawed nature. Undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and beautiful novels I have ever had the good fortune to read. Each of McEwan's sentences are flawlessly crafted. I had read In Between the Sheets a few months back and was totally ambivalent. I had the same expectations for Atonement and was floored by the difference.
