I haven't really decided if I really liked this novel or not, it's a unique case. On one hand, it is written beautifully and reads like a classic. On the other hand, it reads like a classic. There were times when I was really struggling to get through the pages and it seemed it took McEwan FOREVER to get his point across. The second half of this book is easier to get through than the first. I'd say it is well written, but the story line was incredibly disturbing to me. The first half is heavy on description and moves at quite a slow pace.

So this book utterly swept me away in its gorgeous prose. This was my first Ian McEwan novel but most certainly will not be my last. His rich portraits of Cecelia, Robbie, and Briony and the world they inhabit absolutely carry you away which is why he makes you feel so passionately what happens to all of these characters even Briony in her flawed nature.
