A good book, but sometimes hard to read for its depictions of cruelty to animals, however I realize this was life for the circus people during the Great Depression. I learned much about the circus and its strange and diverse characters.
Perhaps I live in the land of the overly sensitive. My anxiety after the first description of animal cruelty took my breath away. Not trusting this to be the only incident, I kept my guard up. I don't want to feel sick to my stomach anticipating another deplorable act; And, there were more to come.

This is wonderfully written, so vivid and fascinating.. reminds me of Holes by Sachar. Could very well be a modern classic, at least in my books (pun intended).although it is pretty..um..graphic.
A little cruder than I expected, and sadder as well, but a captivating story.
I liked the author's writing style...book was good.
