I found this immensely entertaining; a book that gripped me from the first page to last, with no dull passages I was tempted to skim, and one I hated to put down until finished. It didn't make me cry or laugh out loud or make me think, so I guess it doesn't quite deserve top marks, but Setterfield sure knows how to spin a yarn. She knows both how to turn a phrase and how to put more than one twist in her tale. This is a tale in the gothic tradition of Jane Eyre or Turn of the Screw.

This is a very well-written story. I loved the rich usage of the English language and the elaborate vivid descriptions about human feelings, nature and the concepts of one's birth and death. One of my favourite dialogues is spoken by Vida Winter talking about her birth to Margaret Lea. "I am human.Like all human, I do not remember my birth.By the time we wake up to ourselves, we are little children, and advent is something that happened an eternity ago, at the beginning of time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had just enough darkness and intrigue to keep me wanting to turn the page. I loved Margaret's love of books and reading. I could completely understand how she felt about getting lost in a story. The writing was fantastic. Excellent book. Loved it. ...more
