Kidd's language and storytelling are nicely crafted and paced in this novel often compared to "To Kill a Mockingbird." Not as good, of course. Interesting story of an abused white girl setting off with her black housekeeper across the South to find her aunt.

This book reminded me a lot of To Kill a Mockingbird (due in large part to the race issues that formed a large portion of the story line) and Fried Green Tomatoes (probably due to the abundance of bees and the part they played). Overall, it was a perfect mix. I enjoyed the story immensely, and I found myself so caught up in the characters that I could actually feel their pain, their losses and their wins.
