Id like to like this book more. I did want to find out about her mother and who did the shooting. And that kept me reading and interested. But i disliked the book from about page 10 and didnt like it much more having finished. Two main criticisms: Kidd never explores or resolves the disparities in Lily's percpetions of middle class lighter skinned Black women and her Black mammy. Also, I cant figure out why White people feel Black women are falling over themselves to take care off unwanted White ...more

I thought this novel was decent. The story line had a lot of potential and I did enjoy the ending. However, what kept me from loving this book is the fact that it is so chock-full of wisdom and metaphor. Don't get me wrong, I love a good theme/lesson in a book, but I really hate when the author is trying to spell it out for me at every turn. I really enjoyed this book. It's the story of a young girl searching for answers about her deceased mother. The author does so much more with the story than most books on the same subject and her writing is amazing. I think we did if for book club, but I'm not sure. ...more

All done. Not my genre of books (I'm not much for chicklit, and though this is deep I'd still classify it as one). It's a good book, but won't leave a lasting impression on me, though. I can see why they are making a movie out of it, though. You read it and can almost see "Now coming to theaters" in your mind. ...more

Great book. I'll admit it starts an little slow, but, boy oh boy, does this book take you for a ride.

This book has so much to say about relationship between women. Friendships that we should treasure. The spirit of the book sends you soaring, and you don't come down until the last sentence.

I enjoyed this book even with the sadness that is inherent in the story. It was uplifting to read about the natural kindness of women to one another.
