After hearing many people rave about this book, I picked it up and from the onset I disliked it.

This is my third Jodi Picoult book, and maybe my last. It's not that I dislike her books or her writing style. All of the books I've read have had great character development and I couldn't put them down. They are just so PAINFUL. I love a good cry. Some of my favorite books have been serious tear jerkers. But, as a mom, these are a different kind of cry. It's like she sits down before she writes her books and thinks, what's the most horrible thing that could happen to a family? I love the way this book was written, from the points of view of each of the various characters--however, you never get the REAL central character's view (Kate) until the end. This book was an emotional read, though I suspect parents might get more emotional over it than I did. Cried so much during this book my husband threatened to take it from me. The story of one family's struggle to cure their daughter's lukemia by having another child to serve as a bone marrow donor. Anna eventually tires of the procedures and the restrictions her parents put on her and hires a lawyer so she can become emancipated. Heartbreakingly sad. ...more

As the first Jodi Picoult book I read it was easy to like (namely because I find authors who write about the same thing tend to get on my nerves the more I read them, hence reading the same thing over and over). The main characters I found developed and intriguing, however the others (the family members) I thought were a bit one sided and simplistic.

I was actually really fascinated by this book. The topic is very interesting and controversial. However, the ending was not so much. Prepare to be disappointed.

a good, thought provoking book. Picoult did a great job having her characters portray different sides of a moral issue.
