Cold Sassy Tree takes place in the early 1900s, when it wasn't appropriate for a man to marry only three weeks after his wife's death (in fact, I don't think that would be entirely appropriate now either), but E. Rucker Blakeslee did just that and didn't care what anybody thought of it. In his words, his deceased wife was "as dead as she's ever gonna be".
