A beautiful book. So full, so amazing. I was worried after reading his fantastic short stories that somehow his novel wouldn’t match that writing. Not an issue. If you have missed Edward P. Jones or not heard of him (even though he’s been nominated for National Book Award and has won the Pulitzer) run to your nearest library or bookstore and read him. Highly highly recommended.

Beautifully written book, but heartbreaking too. I struggled to get in to it at first, but I couldn't leave the story of these peoples lives, and I'm glad I stuck with it. Slavery is not an uplifting subject, and it amazes me that this was such a part of our culture for so long.

The topic of the book was fascinating and intriguing: slave holding by black people prior to the Civil War. A criticism I would have for the book was that there were so many characters developed in the book and because the author shifts back and forth in time and place, I often found myself confused as I tried to tie the story together.
