I'm a great fan of the Hornblower series as a whole, which I'd certainly give five stars, but this volume isn't where I'd start even though it's the first chronologically. When a friend recommended Hornblower to me back in high school, he told me to start rather with the third book, published earlier, Hornblower and the Hotspur, where the hero is mature and fully realized.
