I've had a fascination for the Tudors and the six wives of Henry VIII at least since I visited England at fourteen-years-old and picked up this thin booklet on each complete with their portraits. As a result, I've read plenty of books, fiction and non-fiction on the Tudors and Henry and his wives. This is my favorite historical novel based on those figures, and so much better (oh so infinitely better as history and fiction) than the execrable The Other Boleyn Girl.

This one is told from Henry's POV which makes him a lot more sympathetic than perhaps he deserves. Fortunately, Will Somers' interjections add some much-needed perspective. Unfortunately, there is not enough of Will Somers. Not even close to enough.
This one was good to get more of Henry's early years as king. Anne Boleyn doesn't show up until halfway through around page 500. (And believe it or not, I am getting a bit tired of Anne's story.)

Obviously, I love reading novels set in Tudor England. This is the first novel I've read that is from Henry's point of view. If I could, I'd give it 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed it, even though it was over 900 pages. It held my interest throughout. I loved reading the other side of the story. I'd definitely recommend it, but only to those obsessed with Henry VIII's court like me. Others, I'm sure, would find it long.

This is alot of book. It is very well researched but half way through I just was not that interested. However, I read it to the end in hope something more exciting was to happen. It didn't. Is it historical fiction or history book? hmmm...But, I do recommend checking out the very back for the bibliography list for further research into the life of Henry the VIII- which seems far more interesting than this book.

Although Margaret George provides a very sympathetic view of King Henry, the book is absolutely captivating. For such a lenghty novel, I couldn't put it down and grieved when it was over.
