What I loved most about this book is the voice of Anna. Written in first person, Brooks immediately sets the scene by her outstanding use of language, using old (1660's) English, but in a way that the modern reader can easily understand. (I reread that sentence, oh dear, too many commas.)

This book has flaws-as other reviewers have described-but I still found it worthy of 4 stars, and an enjoyable read.
The story of this village where (most of) the occupants nobly agreed to close their gates and attempt to protect their countrymen from the Plague is a fascinating one, and the horrors and sadness of the time are well described. I wanted to pick it up and keep reading, and it was only after I started my next book that I really appreciated how well written it is.

A book about a year in the life of a small English village during the Plague years--based on a supposed true historical story. The town willingly walls itself away to prevent spreading the disease. Told from the perspective of a young widow. This isn't an intellectual challenge; in fact, at times it borders on sappy romance-novel conventions, but the main character is wonderfully drawn and the depiction of life in the Middle Ages is well done. This book really surprised me. I was swept up into the story and the characters and really loved that it was based on a true account.
