Found this on a Vintage Classics shelf at Borders, and I can see why it was there. It is an enjoyable read that hasn't lost anything of its effect since it was first published in 1949. It is told from the point of 16-year-old Cassandra, who lives in a crumbling castle with her eccentric family, who are so well characterised that they are entirely believable.

This is a wonderful read that deserves to be listed as a YA classic. A little bit Austen but not quite so formal. Populated by a cast of eccentric characters, the narrator is a charming 17 year old girl, Cassandra. The characters are well developed and always interesting, the story doesn't follow the happy ever after formula and at the end it left me wondering what was next for the characters - always a sign of a good read.
