A lot of the creatures in Tolkien's world come from Northern European legends--elves and dwarves and wizards--but one thing comes from Tolkien--and that's hobbits, and The Hobbit is his first book, that introduced the universe that The Lord of the Rings is set in, but could stand on its own. Classic and lighthearted.
Cute little tale. I like the narrative style, like a grandfather telling a bedtime story to his grandson.
Re-read for the fourth time this year.
