This is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings. I actually read LOTR first when I was 9 years old (back when dinosaurs walked the earth...) and it was rough going, so I highly recommend reading The Hobbit first. We're talking The Hobbit here. Bilbo Baggins what else can I say. Would there have been a Lord of the Rings trilogy without The Hobbit? Who writes better fantasy than J. R. R. Tolkiens? Read it you'll like it. Hobbits, Riders, Dragons- everything needed for good story telling.
