This is a poignant tale of Afghanistan and it's people, especially Amir, his baba, Rahim Khan, Ali Hassan and Sohrab and other characters. It starts with the heyday of Afghanistan and it's ruin as it eventually falls into the hands of the Taliban. This is one of my favourite books which has kept me riveted to the end, to know whether Sohrab finally could go to America after he cuts himself and is almost killed. This story is told by Amir, who at the start is a young boy coming of age in an Afghanistan falling apart, and primarily dealing with his friendship with Hassan, the "kite runner" of the title. Taking us from the 1970s to March of 2002, this riveted me from the first page. The style is elegant and clean, with an eye and ear for the details to bring an unfamiliar culture to life.

This book got a lot more credit than it was due. Yes the story may have been heart wrenching but the biggest problem I had with it was how contrived and unbelievable the storyline was. The book was far too formulaic,depressingly simplistic and one dimensional.
