It may be a great book for children which explains all these excited reviews - the people who have written them must have read the book first in childhood. However, I have read it only now in quite a grown-up age and couldn't make myself read the last 20 pages or so. The ironic comments by the author which seemed so witty at first gradually became unbearably annoying and I just somehow couldn't feel sympathy for the main heroine, who seemed too silly and shallow.

I first read this book in high school, WAY before it was made into a movie. I have recommended this book to everyone I know.
The book is written with so much inner dialogue, I was skeptical of it making a good movie. It is by far one of the funnest and funniest books I've ever read. Laugh out loud funny.
