Through some memories and flashbacks, this story is set in the mid-1980s (which was present day at time of publication) and focuses on the Keeling family: Penelope, Olivia, Nancy and Noel. This was a light read. Often that is exactly what I am looking for. A good friend gave me this book as a gift because it is her favourite. It's the kind of book that I will read every few years. I loved the characters, and how they changed with the passage of years, before and after WWII. Ms Pilcher writes with a rather old fashioned British attitude, dwelling on simple things that really matter in life. I enjoy a family saga that circles around the lives of many characters. This one with a theme of smart independent women and strong family ties may be dated now, but still has a worthy message.
