This is a great book. The first-person perspective of Celie was not only exceptionally devastating, almost from the first page, but also poignant. I particularly loved the author's usage of the diary entries/letters to explore Celie's inner thoughts as well as the general plotline. Obviously, the passages about the color purple were magnificent, and I found it interesting that Celie at one point loses her faith in God before rediscovering it in the last letter when Nettie returns home. I wasn't so sure how I was going to like this book at first. I couldn't get over Celie's dialect but after a few chapters I got used to it. Celie is the main character and this book is a collection of her letters to God because she is so ashamed to write or tell anyone else. After awhile, she starts to write her sister, Nettie, who she finds out is living in Africa along with her 2 children. This story was very moving and felt real. Tragic from the beginning, The Color Purple was a tough read (content-wise), that makes you think. I struggled about a third of the way through and then when the letters between the sisters started I really got into it again. I'm not sure I could bear to ever read it again, but I'm glad I finished it. Race, family, love, abuse, tragedy, betrayal - the list of themes and issues covered goes on... and yet it flows well as a story.
