It took a little while to get used to the writing style of this book; written so that you can hear the narrator speaking as you read, and with its eccentric spelling. Once past that, this is a tale of family and relationships. Love in all sorts of forms somehow comes through the abuse, self-doubt, race and gender issues. A little gem.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end. I sympathised with Celie's character and found it profoundly touching that her abusive husband was later able to acknowledge his mistakes in life and attempt to change himself. Everyone loves a story with a happy ending and I'm no exception. So you can imagine my joy when Nettie and her family returned from Africa, reuniting Celie with her sister and children.
