The story traces the life of Scarlett O Hara through the civil war, reconstruction and its aftermath. The book is quite long and some portions of the book do drag on a little. However, the writing is so exquisite that you visualize the entire book rather than read it. Everything from the characters, their clothing, the buildings and the surroundings are so lovingly portrayed that it really transports the reader to the war and its anguish.
