A story about a rapidly mutating flu virus killing off the human race? Very topical! Though by the time I finished it, the latest scourge (swine flu) seems to have lost its impact. Long enough to keep me entertained across half the globe (the expanded version at 1325 pages) it isn't the ideal airplane novel because it weighs enough to make your hand luggage a burden.

I really enjoyed this book, but it is not my favorite by Stephen King. What a book! I'm not a huge King fan...but, this is an excellent story. So realistic in so many ways...it is really quite disconcerting! King is able to show what happens to people when tragedy strikes...both the good and bad. And, even being as long as it is...I didn't want to put it down!

I ABSOLUTELY loved this book, it had me captured from start to finish. I felt I really formed a bond with the characters, especially Stu, Tom, Nick, Larry and Frannie. The Dark Man is a truely terrifing character, in a way he reminds me of Hitler - trying to destory a race (the free zone could be classed as a race - black, white and so on came together)
I would recommend this book to anyone and would say its a great way of being introduced to Stephen King.
