In the year 2054 a young Oxford undergraduate, Kivrin, is sent back in time to 1320 to study the Middle Ages for what she expects will be two weeks. The first thing that goes wrong is that she arrives not in 1320 but 1348--in the midst of the Black Plague. We alternate between Kivrin in medieval Britain and her tutor Dunworthy back in 2054, where an influenza breakout is complicating attempts to find out what happened to her.

Could have been 100 pages shorter. The story got off to a roaring start then soon started dragging. Kept wanting things to start happening and the lead character to start interacting more with the people in the time period she had been sent back to. Flipping back and forth between the time periods was good: if it was going slow in one era, a change of scenery helped me stick with the story.
