We never know her real name---she is just Offred (Of Fred) indicating to whom she "belonged" as a Handmaid, a woman only useful because she has previously had a living child so is presumably fertile and thereful needed by society. In this world where women "share" the responsibilities of the roles of women, they are ciphers, controlled by very limiting rules and having to stay within the bounds of their prescribed roles.

It pains me to say, but I'm going to set The Handmaid's Tale aside for now. The book has been incredibly influential since it was written, inspiring many feminist critical interpretations of its dystopian future vision in which women have lost all rights.

For all this, The Handmaid's Tale should be right up my alley. Yet I felt detached and even bored with the book. I read about half before deciding that I didn't care enough to slog through another half. I don't like how Ms Atwood plays coy with

At first I fell in love with the author's words, then got bored by what seemed to me a constant moaning from the protaganist.
