In the foreword of the book, Toni Morrison says that she wants "the reader to be kidnapped" by the book and that is /exactly/ what happens. Beloved is an incredibly moving, incredibly powerful book that grabs you by the shoulders and forces you to feel every ounce of the pain in the story. Not an easy read, in more than one sense. I think maybe Morrison was at times too oblique, which I'd ordinarily see as a flaw, but might be a mercy here. I'm still not sure exactly what was done to Sethe, or maybe it's just hard to accept what I think happened. It's a brutal, harrowing book at times.
