If I was a high school English teacher I would assign this book as a gentle introduction to "magical realism." I could never, despite numerous attempts, get into "100 years of Solitude." Off-put if not overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of it's "magical realism" I was. But if you're looking for Gabriel Garcia Marquez "light" with a touch of "Crime and Punishment," interested in pre-Castro Batista Cuba, this is a quick read for you.
