I listened to this book.
I've read several books by Neil Gaiman and have enjoyed them. I don't know what to make of American Gods. There are parts that make absolutely no sense to me and I can't for the life of me understand how they fit into the rest of the story. I'm so unsettled by this book. Maybe I'm not smart enough to catch all the purported genius. The book started off well and then just ... dissolved into utter nonsense. I hate to use that word - - it's not what I really mean. I'm at the end and I'm confused - - kind of. Having said that, I can't really put it down and maybe that's the genius of Gaiman after all.

Though it does drag in the beginning and does not live up to some of Gaiman's other work (Sandman, Marvelman), this book is really excellent (and everything that is boring in the beginning becomes more interesting later). The concept of the New Gods is great, and I'm excited for his planned direct sequel focusing on them. I also enjoyed how Greek mythology was barely referenced in favor of dozens of other mythologies. Underwhelming, but maybe that's because I expect a lot from Neil Gaiman. I'm always hoping to be blown away like I was with Sandman.

The forced adult-ness grates a bit more than when I read this book in high school, but otherwise it's still very enjoyable.
