3.5 Stars for the Blog Of Sid Love

“Unhinge the Universe”. We wanted to feel this. The shifts in power, the world toppling over and we wanted this story to be more than a history lesson with sex.
It was with wary trepidation that we approached Hagen’s character. As trusting as we were in the authors, Hagen being a soldier of the Waffen SS is by no means a detail. It was a welcomed challenge to look for the man behind the runic insignia a ...more

This has to be one of the most enthralling reads I have read to date. Intriguing, well balanced, beautifully written and packed full of suspense.
This book is a team effort by two authors and I must admit I'm always a little careful with collaborations because sometimes you can tell exactly which author is writing which part due to an abrupt change in style. I'm happy to say that this is not the case here. The book flows beautifully and if you didn't know any different then you would think it was ...more

4.5 STAR SPANGLED STARS
I've been struggling with writing this review for a couple of days. There's no way for me to do this justice other than to just say what I liked/loved about this. There are plenty of professionals out there giving the dissection type reviews with flowery words.
I'll admit that first, Alek's style of writing just appeals to me. If I hadn't KNOWN he wrote this, I would have guessed it. There were lightly blown whispers of how I felt about the love affair in Special Forces. T ...more

That was bloody brilliant. I want to read it again right away, and then again. Easily my favourite book of the year so far, and I'd be very surprised if it didn't make my top three.

It is hard pull off a love affair between two protagonists, defiantly two. Who should rightfully want to kill each other and make it believable, but he did it. Have to put this in my reread file, now that its a personal revelation that I have never read any German perspective fiction, I'll need to address very soon.

Both authors are auto-buys for me, I also enjoy WWII stories so was really looking forward to reading this - and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The writing is beautiful; taut and full of emotion and imagery - the sense of desolation and horror at this stage of the war really came through.
Both main characters were so well-drawn; doing what they had to in order to survive, sculpted by their environment. I really felt for Hagen; he was such a complicated mix of competent killer and young innocent trying to ...more

The parts without sex actually reminded me of other WWII thrillers I've read. I know it sounds kind of disparaging, like "Hey. I can't believe it actually seemed real" but you have to admit that a lot of the time, M/M seems to be more along the lines of "screw the rules, especially if they don't lead to actual screwing." Although the authors are Voinov and Witt, so I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised.
The only things that made me pause and wonder were the erection-related slang. Kind of made me ...more
