This is a good book about an important topic. I’m glad Mr. Cleaves wrote an accessible novel to get people talking about the plight of refugees. It’s needed.
But something was missing from this novel for me. When I got over my “yay, important issue in a best-selling book” reaction, it struck me that the story underneath has a lot of little holes in it. I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. THE ONLY PROBLEMS I HAVE WITH IT ARE THE CHARACTERS OF SARAH AND LAWRENCE. SARAH IS STRONG ENOUGH TO CUT OFF HER FINGER TO SAVE AN AFRICAN GIRL FROM DEATH, YET SHE IS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH A SELFISH MARRIED TURD NAMED LAWRENCE. BOTH HER HUSBAND AND HER LOVER ARE SHALLOW COWARDS WHILE HER TRUTH LIES SOMEWHERE IN THE CULTURAL MALAISE OF LITTLE BEE'S EXPERIENCES. I'm embarassed that it took me SO LONG TO READ. It was a real struggle for me. This book appears to have all the makings for a really good book, but it just didn't do it for me. It stirs many emotions in the book, you might find yourself laughing, shouting among other emotions. I'm giving it 3 stars.
